Geography

At Stoke Primary, we deliver a high quality geography curriculum which inspires in pupils a curiosity and fascination about the world and its people. Our teaching equips pupils with knowledge about places and people, resources in the environment, physical and human processes and formation and use of landscapes. We want children to develop geographical skills: collecting and analysing data; using maps, globes, aerial photographs and digital mapping to name and identify countries, continents and oceans; and communicating information in a variety of ways. We want children to enjoy and love learning about geography by gaining this knowledge and skills, not just through experiences in the classroom, but also with the use of fieldwork and educational excursions taking advantage of the local surroundings. Our geography curriculum is underpinned by four principles.

Through geography at Stoke, we strive for children to:

  • Become 'global citizens' and nurture a curiosity and wonder about the world around them, especially their local area of Stoke and their home nations;

  • Develop fieldwork skills to provide a 'real world' context for learning;

  • Be able to critically analyse resources and evidence in order to draw conclusions;

  • Recognise their role in ensuring the future of the planet and understanding ways to do this
