Guided and Home Readers
At Stoke, we use a range of reading materials to broaden the children’s reading experience where appropriate.
In Reception and Key Stage 1, our guided and home readers are linked to our Super Sonic Phonic Friends phonics lessons, which ensure that all children who are learning to read decodable reading books that are closely matched to their phonic knowledge. These books cover a variety of fiction and non-fiction texts.
Banded books
In Key Stage 2, children take part in whole class reading lessons using books, linked to their topics and extracts and selected for interest and to teach reading skills specifically. For home reading in Year 3-6 , we provide finely-levelled books from a range of reading schemes including popular characters such as Doctor Who and Ben 10. Theae are arranged into colour bands. There are a range of texts types to engage different interests and build reading confidence, including fiction, non-fiction, comics, plays and poetry. Children will bring home a book carefully matched to their reading ability.
