Morning work in the Aviary consists of next steps towards their Development Matters Targets, White Rose Maths Year One Curriculum , Handwriting , Phonological knowledge and theme Understanding.
We have started the Year with a story about emotions. The Colour monsters are different colours for different feeling and emotions such as Happy, Sad , Anger and fear.
The children will learn emotions through the stories and videos. Tonie Story box, books and resources.
They can communicate these through spoken words, PECs and Symbol Boards and Makaton signing.
Reading and stories play a big part in the Aviary. Each child has a Boom reader account and are encouraged to read or look at a book daily. We have themed stories that are repeated daily. We also watch stories that are requested by the children towards the end of the day. We have a vast range of books available inside and around school for the children to read. Bucket time often brings the stories to life with sensory sessions to engage all the children. The resources around the classroom match the Story and individual targets that have been set.
Group worked is mostly based around Attention Autism (Bucket time)
Bucket Time (part of the Attention Autism approach) consists of four stages:
tage 1: The Bucket
Activity:
The adult demonstrates cause-and-effect with the objects, modeling engagement and attracting the children's focus.
Purpose:
To capture children's attention using a bucket filled with visually and sensorially stimulating objects.
Stage 2: The Attention Builder
Purpose:
To extend the children's ability to sustain attention through a fun, stimulating activity.
Activity:
The adult leads a short, captivating activity, often involving sensory stimuli, aiming to be the most interesting thing in the room.
Stage 3: Interactive Turn-Taking
Stage 4: Independent Exploration/Table Time
Purpose:
To encourage independent application of skills and manage shifts in attention.
Activity:
Children complete an individual hands-on task using what they've learned, applying their skills before returning to the group to share their experience.
We also explore Theme learning and sensory learning together using our imagination, fine motor skills, sharing and perseverance.
To encourage independent learning we have "we can set some goals today," tables. The are set up with little tasks the children can complete on their own. This follows the My Happy Mind program that we follow throughout school. We have a Session of My Happy Mind to finish our school day.
In the Aviary we have lots of resources to help with Communication. Using modelled language appropriate for each individual child, Use of PECs and Inprint symbols and Makaton.
