Stoke Primary School recognises the vital contribution of physical education (PE) to a child’s physical, cognitive, social and emotional development, as well as the role it can play in relation to a child’s spiritual, moral and cultural development. We feel it is a great opportunity for both teachers and children to work on the values that underpin every aspect of school life. Physical education develops the children’s knowledge, skills and understanding so that they are able to perform with increasing competence and confidence in a range of physical activities.

To ensure high standards of teaching and learning in Physical Education, we implement a curriculum that is progressive throughout the whole school. Stoke Primary provides challenging and enjoyable learning through a range of sporting activities: invasion games; net and wall games; striking and fielding games; gymnastics; dance; swimming; and outdoor and adventure. The long term plan sets out the PE units which are to be taught throughout the year and ensures that the requirements of the National Curriculum are fully met. In KS1, PE lessons are regularly taught using themes that are being taught in wider curriculum areas. Pupils participate in two high quality PE lessons each week, covering two areas of the national curriculum each half term. In addition, children are encouraged to participate in the varied range of extra-curricular activities. Pupils in years 2, 4 and 5 attend swimming for half a term and children in year 6 will attend top up swimming if they still have not met national requirements.

By the end of each child's primary school journey we hope that:

• Each child has a knowledge of multiple sports to continue developing in secondary school
• Each child to understand how to live a healthy life through exercise and sport both physically and mentally
• Each child to have developed different skills through sport such as; teamwork, communication, respect, integrity, leadership, honesty, self, belief, passion and determination
