Dear Parents and Carers

What a busy time we have had in Key Stage 1.  The children have continued to engage well with their learning and we have enjoyed many wonderful and fun moments throughout this half term.

The half term began with our online parent consultations and, whilst these were not in person, it was really great to be able to speak with the majority of you.  There will be another opportunity for you to talk with your child’s teacher later on in the Spring Term but please also remember that I am on the gate most mornings and am available to speak with you then about any concerns you may have or if you need messages passed on to your child’s teacher.

During the last part of this half term, the teachers were tasked with teaching a ‘never taught before topic’.  With all of our teaching experience within the phase, it was quite hard to find a topic that none of us had ever taught before but we finally decided on ‘Under the Sea’ and what a success the topic has been.  The children have had opportunities to learn about ocean life, create bubble fact files, learn about the world’s seas and oceans and even make sea life dioramas.

All of the children have been working hard to improve their phonics – a skill which is crucial to reading and writing development and the Year 2 children have had an opportunity to show off their phonic brilliance during the phonic screening which was delayed from the Summer Term.  Overall we have been so pleased with how well they have performed and with how hard they have worked.  As always, we appreciate the support that you give at home with listening to the children read and talking about what they are reading.  Please continue to do so – a child who reads well is generally one who has a wealth of vocabulary and a great imagination.

The last couple of weeks have been filled with Christmas fun – Christmas jumper days, Christmas songs, Christmas fayres, Christmas fun in the classroom and the making of some lovely Christmas crafts which we hope you will treasure as they are brought home at the end of term.

We wish you all a wonderful, safe and restful holiday and look forward to working with our children and their families next year.  Please remember that school re-opens to children on Tuesday 5th January 2021.

Kind Regards

Mrs Brooker (KS1 Phase Leader) and the KS1 team.
