Spring 1

TOPIC RATIONALE – Bodyworks

This is an immersive Science based topic which also covers reading, writing, PE and PSHE. The aim of the topic is to develop the children’s understanding of a complicated scientific concept by providing them with as many hands on and practical experiences as possible across a range of subjects. Children will be taught the knowledge content through science, PE, PSHE and reading lessons before presenting their knowledge as an interactive non-chronological report as part of their writing lessons. This will enable the children to share their understanding and make choices of how to present their learning in a way which engages the reader.

Characteristics of Effective Learning

  1. Playing and Exploring-
  •  Show curiosity about objects – dissection.
  • Find out and explore – dissection.
  • Seek challenges – NHS Active Lifestyles programme.
  • I am willing to ‘have a go’ - NHS Active Lifestyles programme.
  1. Active Learning-
  • I can show high levels of energy and fascination – dissection.
  • I can pay attention to details – blood groups
  • I can maintain focus on my activity for a period of time – creating interactive non-chronological report.
  1. Creating and thinking critically
  • I can make links – recognising the link between PE, the body and PSHE learning
  • I can make predictions – science experiments – heart rate and respiration.
  • I can choose ways to do things – interactive double page spread.
