At Stoke Primary School, we are all very proud of our school. We are known for providing a welcoming and caring atmosphere where children learn confidently in happy surroundings. Great care is taken to provide for the social, moral and educational needs of the individual child.

 

Our school is a place where mutual respect is encouraged and opportunities for challenge are provided. Our children achieve good standards in English and Mathematics, compared with similar schools, and we are exceptionally proud of their achievements.

 

The children experience an environment where everyone is encouraged to do their best in order to reach their full potential. During school and after school we offer a range of opportunities for children to develop further skills such as football, art, multisport and music. Whilst ensuring that children receive excellent teaching in English and Mathematics we believe that education should offer more and that most importantly it should be fun!

 

Stoke Primary is a two form entry school located in the Stoke area of Coventry comprising of 4 groups in Nursery(2 morning and 2 afternoon) and 14 classes from Reception to Year 6. The main building has undergone major improvements in recent years and we have worked hard to create an extremely bright, colourful and stimulating school. We have good quality equipment for the children to use at playtimes and have also ensured our playground has a canopied area where the children can enjoy shade in the summer months and our Early Years outdoor area has recently been upgraded to support the children’s learning.

 

We have very close links with the community and participate in a wide range of activities with other local schools and schools within our “Aspire too” network. Our dedicated team of teachers and support staff whose experience, expertise and efforts, make the school come alive. We work in close partnership with our Governors and parents.

 

We hope the friendships the children make during their time with us will be long lasting and based on mutual respect and care. We endeavour to prepare children for later life and hope that their time at Stoke Primary School will not only enable them to become lifelong learners who achieve their full potential but also provide them with some happy memories.

Welfare

Please make sure we have up to date emergency contact details for your child. We know that parents may change their mobile phones – please let us know immediately - in the case of an emergency, we may need to contact you.

Please let us know of any medical or other problems concerning your child. This will help ensure that your child has a happy and stress free time at school. All concerns and information will be dealt with confidentially and discreetly. It may be necessary to complete a Healthcare Plan.

First Aid

As in all schools children can sustain minor injuries while they are at school. If your child has an accident whilst at school it will be recorded in our accident book and reported to the class teacher. If the injury is more serious we will contact you by telephone. The majority of our school staff have attended recent First Aid courses which mean that they are confident in dealing with accidents. Lists of First Aid trained staff are displayed around the school.

Medicines

Pupils at school with medical conditions are supported so that they have full access to education. As such if your child is on a prescribed medicine school are able to support with this but a form needs to be completed by a parent/carer before any medication can be administered. This form is available in the main school office.

 

Children with Asthma

If your child has asthma please could you ensure that the class teacher has working inhalers in school at all times and they are in date. They will be stored as close to the children as possible so that they can use them on a regular basis or as their need demands. In Key stage 2 children are encouraged to be responsible for their own inhalers.

 

Special Educational Needs and Disabled Access  

We have a strong and effective Inclusion Policy which conforms to the Special Educational Needs Code of Practice 2014. We register any concern which it is felt might have a detrimental effect on your child’s educational progress and well-being. This concern may be a temporary or a long term need and may be raised from home or school. If you have any concerns regarding your child’s progress or well-being please raise them as early as possible as this will help to ensure their needs are met.

 

Our Special Educational Needs policy is based on early recognition followed by a graduated approach through regular monitoring and assessment of your child’s needs. Most concerns are addressed by school based provision which generally involves your child receiving additional support either from the class teacher or learning support assistant. This may be individually or in small groups. If our support in school identifies that the child’s special need is more complex, then they will be placed on the SEND support register which may include advice, guidance and assessment of other out of school specialist agencies. An individual SEND support  plan will be written for children receiving SEN support which will set up a specific programme for your child.

 

Some children with more complex Special Educational Needs may require an EHCP needs assessment which will identify the child’s strengths and areas for development and the level of support needed in order for their needs to be met.  

 

Parents are fully informed at every stage of how your child’s SEN needs are being met. Parents are invited in on a termly basis to discuss progress towards targets. Every child receiving SEN support is valued and given equality of opportunity in all areas of school life whatever their class, culture, race, belief, gender, ability or disability.

 

Our school is accessible by wheelchair and we have a hygiene suite for toileting needs.

 

 

Absence and Lateness

We work hard to minimise our rates of authorised and unauthorised absences. If a child is absent from school, it is important that the parent contact the school and inform us as soon as possible. This can be done by telephone or letter. Every day, the Learning Mentors check the registers and follows up any children who are late or absent without reason. This will be via a school comms text, letter or home visit. If a child’s attendance is giving cause for concern the Learning Mentors will contact parents and offer support and guidance to make improvements.. If there is no improvement the Family First team will be informed and further action taken. All pupils whose attendance is below 90% will be raised in a weekly meeting with the schools Family Support Worker.

 

Punctuality

A smooth and punctual start to the day is very important for children. The school doors are opened at 8.45am in preparation for the start of the day at 8.55am. If a child arrives at school after this time they must report to the school office where parents are asked to give reasons for lateness which is recorded on the school system. Punctuality is monitored on a weekly basis with letters being sent to parents whose children are regularly late. The Learning Mentors may compile an improvement plan with a parent to improve punctuality.

 

 

Holidays

The school absence policy states that ‘no family holidays are to be taken during term time as this is disruptive to the child and does affect their progress.’ If for exceptional reasons, leave needs to be taken during term time then parents are asked to complete an Absence Leave Request Form which is held in the school admin office. Once completed, this will be given to the Headteacher and School Governors for consideration.  More information is in the School Attendance Policy.

 

School Uniform

At Stoke Primary School, our school colour is navy blue.

 

It consists of:

 

Navy sweatshirt or cardigan (with school logo),

Trousers/skirt/shorts (grey or black),

Shirt – white or pale blue,

Polo shirt - white or pale blue (school logo or plain).

Navy full or half zip fleece (school logo) for when outside

 

Flat black footwear should be worn at all times.  Velcro fasteners are ideal for promoting independence for younger children. Boots are not acceptable footwear inside school.

 

In the summer girls may wear blue and white checked summer dresses.

A Blue book bag and a PE bag with the school logo are useful.

 

PE Indoor lessons

 

The children wear a plain white T-Shirt and black shorts.

For indoor activities the children work in bare feet.

 

Outdoor lessons

Jumper, cardigan or tracksuit top, pumps/ trainers.

For health and safety reasons children are not allowed to wear jewellery.

Lunchtimes

 

At lunchtimes our children are looked after and cared for by our Lunchtime Supervisors. Children are able to choose between having a school lunch and bringing in a packed lunch from home. If your child brings a packed lunch we respectively ask that they do not contain sweets or fizzy drinks.

Lunches are paid for on a weekly basis and we ask that all money is sent in on a Monday in a named envelope.

At present School lunches cost £10.00 - £2.00 per day (September 2016). For children in Reception, Year 1 and Year 2, school meals are free as they are eligible for the government 'Universal Free School Meals'. For those on Child Tax Credit or whose income is below a government set level free school meals and other benefits may also available. If you require further guidance please speak to a member of staff in the main school office who will be able to direct you to the relevant person.

 

 

Lunchtime Behaviour

 

Our children’s behaviour at lunchtimes is excellent and the children are able to participate in a range of activities. The lunchtime supervisors have green, yellow and red cards to record behaviour on. They award green to children who have shown good manners, behaviour and positive attitudes towards others. They also give out Caught being Good raffle tickets which go into a weekly prize draw. The learning mentors hold a lunchtime club for children who have regular difficulty at lunchtime.


Water

 

All our children are encouraged to drink water regularly. Research has shown that children can become dehydrated very quickly which results in a loss of concentration, irritability and a slump in their mood. Children are able to bring in an individual water bottle to use at school and we have chilled water coolers where they can fill it up regularly.


Behaviour

 

At Stoke Primary School we are very proud of the behaviour of our children. Our aim is to encourage the children to develop their own self-discipline. We do this by creating and maintaining a positive atmosphere where children can make appropriate choices and be successful. We believe in a fair and consistent approach which recognises and celebrates good behaviour whilst calmly managing inappropriate behaviour. We have a school code which we expect children to keep. All children are awarded smilies for good behaviour and attitude.

SCHOOL RULES

Rules

School rules are kept to an essential minimum and are included in our home/school agreement. They have been developed to be meaningful to children. None are too difficult. They are all designed to develop courtesy, good manners and mutual respect. They are to protect children from injury, to care for equipment and to maintain a hygienic, healthy environment. 

 

Anti-social behaviour is not condoned. It is essential that parents and teachers work together through discussion and action on any problems which develop. We expect children to behave sensibly; disruptive and anti-social behaviour is dealt with firmly at all times, including lunchtimes. Children may be removed from the normal groups or loose privileges and if behaviour problems persist, the parents are contacted. Parents and the Headteacher or Deputy Headteacher then discuss and develop a programme to attempt to sort out problems and causes. Regular or extreme inappropriate behaviour at lunchtimes may result in children being asked to go home at lunchtime. Parents are notified of this via a coloured letter scheme.

 

If damage or loss is caused to school property through repeated carelessness or vandalism, parents will be asked to ensure that their child repays a reasonable proportion of the cost. Any action however, will be with understanding and in keeping with that of a responsible parent.

Bullying is unacceptable at any time and we have adopted an anti-bullying policy to support our practice.

These basic rules are simplified and displayed in all classrooms and corridors and regularly verbalised at assemblies.

Children are awarded smileys as individuals and are receive bronze, silver and gold certificates when they have reached the required number of smileys. The children are also encouraged to work as a class to gain class awards.

 

If your child does exhibit inappropriate behaviour we operate a time out system either within the classroom or by reporting to a partner class for time out and this is logged. For children who are sent out 3 times in a day they are sent to the deputy head teacher or the head teacher and letters are sent to parents who are invited in to discuss ways in which we can work together to improve the behaviour of the child.


We follow specific guidelines to ensure we meet the health, welfare and safety of the children

 

a. Food and drink

 

Fruit is provided for Foundation and Key Stage 1 children. Key Stage 2 children may bring fruit from home to eat at morning play. Other than fruit and packed lunches, no food of any kind should be brought into school (unless on medical grounds) including sweets, biscuits and drinks.

 

Reasons: Sweets, etc. present obvious choking hazards. Food and crumbs left around school would soon create a hazardous and unhygienic environment. When children brought drinks they were largely of the high sugar, fizzy, high additive variety. This was believed to be having a detrimental effect on behaviour as well as on dental health, (Coventry has one of the worst dental health records for children nationally.) Drinks were frequently spilled and bottles smashed, spoiling other packed lunches and presenting an unacceptable risk of cuts and food contamination.

 

Children have regular access to water. A choice of quality juice, milk or water is available during lunch.

 

b. Jewellery

 

Watches and stud earrings are the only items of jewellery which may be worn at school and these must be removed during P.E. and swimming lessons. Staff should not be expected to assist children with the removal of jewellery.

 

It should be removed at home on the days the child does PE or swimming particularly if children cannot remove it themselves. Any articles removed by a child should be placed in the child's drawer for the duration of the lesson.

 

Reasons: Rings, necklaces, bracelets etc. can turn a minor incident into a major accident if caught on apparatus or entangled in another child’s clothing or hair. Even stud earrings have the potential to cause severe tears to the wearer’s ears or injury to others.

 

c. PE Kit

 

Appropriate clothing must be worn for all PE activity

 Indoors: No jewellery, bare feet, black shorts, plain white Tee shirt or vest

Reasons: It is dangerous to go on the apparatus wearing trainers or similar footwear because it is more difficult to feel. A combination of bare feet and trainers, etc. can result in trampled toes and damaged nails. Children should exert themselves during PE and therefore should have extra clothing to compensate for heat loss.

 

Outdoors: No jewellery, plimsolls or trainers, shorts, Tee shirt, (Tracksuit in certain conditions)

Reasons: Slip on shoes or laced shoes even with small heels are not suitable for games lessons. They provide insufficient grip, may cause injury to others if kicked off and often lead to twisted ankles (see PE Policy).

 

d. Personal property

The school cannot accept responsibility for the loss or damage to clothing or personal property. Our cloakrooms are small so we request that if children need to bring in bags that they are small ones. Toys, games and sports equipment must not be brought to school (except on special occasions when the staff have given permission). Any money brought into school should be handed in as soon as possible and never left in trays, bags or coats.

 

Reasons: Suitable toys, games and sports equipment are provided for the playground and indoor play. Unsuitable equipment may present a risk to children and present the potential for theft.

 

e. Mobile Phones

Pupils are not allowed mobile phones in school.

 

Reasons: During school hours contact is possible through the school’s land lines. Mobile phones are regarded as hazardous to health. They present an unacceptable disturbance to lessons, potential for theft and cyber bullying.

Homework Policy

 

At Stoke Primary School we see homework as an integral part of learning, and regular parental involvement is vital for this learning to be effective. Homework can encourage a child to become more responsible for their own learning and it can also enhance a parents knowledge of what is expected of their academic performance.

 

We recommend the following as a homework guide;

Key Stage 1 – 1 hour per week

Key Stage 2 – 1 hour and 30 minutes per week

Children are also encouraged to read to an adult daily.

English and Maths homework is sent every week, however subject specific work may be included when appropriate. The children will be required to learn sounds, spellings, number bonds and timetables at home. On occasions children will be asked to complete a home learning task based around their theme.

At Stoke Primary School we feel that the most valuable work you can do at home is to read and share books with your child. Children can take home books every day.

School Council

We have a well-established and popular school council. The children from each class vote for and elect one child to represent their views and concerns. Their term of office is for one school year and they meet fortnightly. Minutes of the meeting are taken and put on a display board with all of their information in the main school reception area.


Child Protection/safeguarding

We take child protection very seriously at Stoke Primary School. Children on occasions disclose information about events in their lives and if the nature of the disclosure warrants it, all staff have a legal obligation to inform the Child Protection team within Social Services. It is also a legal requirement that the school makes this contact prior to the parents being involved. There is more detailed information in the Child Protection & Safeguarding policy.

 


Admissions Policy

Nursery

The school follows Coventry City Council Nursery Admissions Policy. 

The City Council's policy is that nursery education must be made available to all children. It is the policy of the City Council to offer part-time places to children in the year prior to their entry to school i.e. the September following their third birthday, thus offering children one year of Nursery Education.

 

The earliest age a child can start their nursery entitlement at Stoke primary is the September following their third birthday.

 

Coventry has one point of entry to nursery in the September of each year. Children should not be admitted at any other time in the year except under exceptional circumstances i.e. The family have moved into Coventry, or have moved from a different area of the City.

 

Parents/carers must complete an application form containing all the necessary information for a nursery place and, on receipt of the application, the child’s name can be placed on a waiting list. The information must be treated as confidential and in accordance with the Data Protection Act.

 

The admission limit each year is 52- 2 groups in the morning and 2 groups in the afternoon.

 

To apply for a place, parents need to complete an application form and return it to the school office. All parents who make an application for a place in the school’s nursery will receive written confirmation of the place or be informed that the application was unsuccessful due to over subscription. If the application was unsuccessful parents will be given details of their right to appeal.

 

Where a parent wishes to appeal against the decision, this should be done in writing to the Chair of Governors.

 

If there are more requests for a school than there are places available within the school’s admission limit, places will be allocated in preference order using the criteria in priority as follows:

 

1. to children who at the time of admission are in Local Authority care.

 

2. to children who live in the catchment area served by the school, with an older brother or sister at the school who will continue to attend that school the following year.

 

3. to other children who live in the catchment area

 

4. to children outside the catchment area with an older brother or sister at the school who will continue to attend that school the following year.

 

5. to children by reference to the distance to the preferred school. A straight-line measurement will be made to the school. The shortest measurement will have the highest priority.

 

If it is not possible to meet all of the requests in any one of the categories described above, the school will prioritise the requests within that category by reference to distance. A straight-line measurement will be made to the preferred school. The shortest measurement will have the highest priority.

 

School

 

The school Standards and Framework Act 1998 requires that all infant class (years R, 1 & 2) sizes must be limited to a maximum number of 30 by September 2001. Admission limits are therefore based on multiples of 15 and 30, which helps schools to organise infant classes of 30 or fewer.

The admission arrangements for the school are controlled by the Education Department of Coventry City Council. To apply for a primary place parents should complete the application form contained in the ‘Primary Education in Coventry 2006’.

The local authority introduced an equal preferences allocation scheme in September 2006. Parents are able to apply for up to three schools. ALL 3 schools listed will be looked at as equal choices. HOWEVER, parents should ensure they list their priority school as a first choice, followed by second and third choices. All 3 schools will be considered against the respective over-subscription.

Parents whose preference is not met by the Education Department can appeal to an independent appeal panel. However, legislation has been introduced which means that appeals can only be upheld in limited circumstances.

 

If a school place is offered on the basis of an address, which is subsequently found not to be the child’s normal home address, the place will be withdrawn.

The Future

At the beginning of Year 5 your child will bring home details of our secondary schools in order to help you choose which school you would like to select.

 

At the end of Year 6 children perform their own production for parents to say thank you and goodbye to friends and staff.


Complaints Procedure

 

Everyone at Stoke Primary School aims to ensure that your child’s time with us is successful and rewarding. If however you are dissatisfied with an aspect of the school in the first instance please talk to your child’s class teacher and then their Phase Leader

If you need further assistance please speak to the Headteacher or Deputy Headteacher who is available most of the time.

 

A parent who still has concerns should contact the Chair of Governors via the school office. If however it has not been possible to settle a parent’s concerns a formal complaint can be made and a leaflet outlining the arrangements is available from the school office.

 

Charging of School Activities

All schools are legally bound to have a charging policy.

 

Parents will be notified of proposed visits and invited to contribute voluntarily towards the cost. No child will be excluded from activities on the grounds that their parents are unable or unwilling to contribute. However if we receive insufficient voluntary contributions then the visit may not take place. Full details of the charging and remissions policy is on the school website.

 

Parking

In order to ensure the safety of all children and adults on the premises parents are asked to refrain from driving their cars onto the grounds or parking on the zig-zag lines in front of the school. The only exceptions are for cars displaying a disabled badge, and in this instance we ask you to speak to the school office who will assist with any arrangements. The school will give the registration numbers of any vehicles parked inappropriately to the traffic enforcement team who may issue penalty notices.

 

 

The Curriculum

   

Curriculum

We deliver a broad and balanced curriculum through the delivery of Religious Education and the New National Curriculum. Each subject area is well planned and monitored to ensure progression and continuity of learning for all pupils across the school. How and what your child is taught will be communicated to you by the class teacher in a meeting at the beginning of the school year and via termly curriculum newsletters placed on the school website. There is a Teaching & Learning policy document available to all parents from the main school office.

 

Children’s education is divided up into the following three Key stages:

Key Stage One from 5-7 Years

 

Key Stage Two from 7-11 Years

 

The teaching and learning for the Early Years Foundation Stage is organised into areas of

experience rather than individual subjects. These areas follow:

Assessment

We strive to teach all children according to their individual needs and ability and we use a  thorough assessment process to help us achieve this goal. The children are regularly assessed by the teachers in all areas of the curriculum and this information is used to monitor progress, provide additional help if needed, provide more challenge if a child is identified as gifted and talented and to identify the next learning step. More detailed information on our assessment procedures can be found in the policy which is available to all parents.

 

Reporting to Parents

At Stoke Primary School we use Assertive Mentoring which puts the child in the centre of our teaching and their learning. You will hear more about this system in our introduction for new parents and throughout the year.

 

We encourage all children and parents to adopt positive attitudes re attendance, punctuality, behaviour, homework and effort which enables the children to develop positive attitudes to support them in their future lives.

 

Each term you will receive a report about your child’s progress and be invited into school during  the day for a parent consultation meeting when you can talk with your child and their teacher about the report and how you can support their targets for future learning.

 

We do offer later appointments for working parents.

 

Our children really look forward to this meeting and we have received positive comments from our parents who are now able to understand national curriculum expectations for attainment and progress.

 

 

Something Special

 School Clubs

 

 

We offer a wide range of school clubs and the list is constantly extending. We currently offer:

  • Computer
  • Choir
  • Dance
  • Gymnastics
  • Multi sports
  • Glee Club
  • Football
  • Music

Smileys

We have also developed another strategy to encourage excellent work, attitude and behaviour. Children can earn smileys for excellence in all areas. They earn them for themselves and for their class. Children receive bronze, silver and gold awards. Class rewards can be chosen by the class themselves.

Sharing Assembly

Every Friday morning we have an assembly for each class to share with parents their learning and achievements throughout the week. Class stars of the week are also announced Please come and join us – your children really look forward to seeing you.

 

Bringing the Curriculum Alive

We try to make our curriculum exciting and alive. We have held a number of special events including:

 

  • Artists in school
  • Theatre productions
  • International day
  • World book day
  • Visitors from different faiths & cultures
  • Guide dogs & vets

We have many more of these special events planned for the future.

 

School Governors

What they are?

 

Our Governors are a very committed group of people who help with the leadership and management of the school. They are made up of Parents, teachers, other school staff, local authority representatives and community representatives (Co-opted governors).

 

They have legal powers, duties and responsibilities and meet regularly to discuss many aspects of the schools work including:

 

  • Standards achieved within the school
  • The appointment of new staff
  • How the school budget is spent
  • What is being taught

Meetings

The full Governing Body meets every half term. Small groups of Governors form committees and meet termly to discuss curriculum, finance, school improvement, premises and admissions.
