28th November 2016
Dear Parent or Guardian,
It is with great sadness that I write this letter to inform you that we learned on Friday that a dear colleague and dedicated teacher, Miss Helen McAvoy died on Thursday 24th November. Miss McAvoy had returned to school in April following a year’s treatment for cancer. She became unwell in October and was admitted to hospital on the 17th November.
On Friday at the end of the school day staff were informed and they were, understandably, shocked and distraught.
We would now like your assistance and ask that you do not tell your child about this sad news until they are at home where they will be better able to digest this information and will have family around them to provide comfort and support. We recognise that this is a difficult conversation to have but feel it is very important that you tell your child as we do not want them hearing this from other children on the playground.
We are endeavouring to prepare staff so that they are able to answer children’s questions and provide support and guidance when they come into school tomorrow. Additionally, we have requested the help and support of counsellors for all affected by this news at this difficult time.
If you feel your child would benefit from group/individual counselling please let the Family Support Worker know via the school office.
We do not have any dates or details of the funeral arrangements at this time but will keep you posted as and when they are known.
Thank you for your support and understanding at this sad time. Miss McAvoy will be greatly missed by all children and staff at Stoke Primary School.
